My response to the question marks I’ve been sent over calling calling web television “indieTV” on New Mediacracy, followed by Mike Ambs original inquiry:
To follow up on your follow up - just quickly wanted to clarify the point I was making (on NM sometimes a lot of people talk at once and you don’t get to finish your thought). Basically the full question was asking, in this new media landscape where we have mini-shows referred to as webseries or webTV, etc. is it so bad to consider that small avenue of the internet independent television? Not in any way limiting the internet itself or the ability to create an experience exclusive to the internet - just trying to ask that if you make a five episode series put it up online as a webseries using the internet as your distribution platform, and in no other way try and embrace the possibilities the internet provides, is it so bad just to call that indie TV and move on with it. The week leading up to the episode there was a great debate as to how to define webseries and I was just trying to deflate the argument that everything needs a label - I make shows for the internet that aren’t meant to be a jumping off point to television but at the same time aren’t utilizing the benefits of being online - they’re just for fun, a way to exercise creativity, and I put them out them online because it was the quickest and most efficient way to get people to watch and critique my work helping me grow as a creator. Started rambling - bringing it back to the point - The internet defies explanation, it’s constantly changing and growing and evolving, there’s no right or wrong way to “define” it - and the point I was trying to make was, who cares how people label what you do online, it doesn’t change the content - the content is what it is and people will call it whatever best enables them to identify it.
